Tinted Lip Balms

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, I LOVE making my own natural skincare. I haven’t had to buy lip balm in 10 years and counting! I wanted to share my latest recipe with you because I adore how they turned out and think they would make awesome holiday gifts. I’ve infused jojoba oil with alkanet root which colours the lip balms to a soft pink or a deep red deep depending on how much you use. I love using alkanet because it doesn’t block the skin from breathing. I find if I use micas to colour my lip balms, it tends to dry out my lips while using beet powder feels too gritty. Since alkanet isn’t a powder, your lips will breathe, feel healthier and look lusciously pink!

Lip Balm Recipe

125ml jojoba oil
1-4 Tbsp alkanet root (I used 2 Tbsp)

40-45ml melted beeswax (use 40ml for unscented and 45ml if adding essential oils)
1/2 tsp vitamin E
Optional: 20 drops essential oil (favourites of mine are peppermint, lavender, cardamon and geranium)

Add alkanet root to jojoba oil and seal tightly. Shake and then allow to infuse for a few hours or overnight.
Strain alkanet using a nut milk bag, fine mesh sieve or a few layers of cheesecloth. Squeeze to press out as much of your infused oil as possible. Top up to 125ml if necessary.
Melt beeswax in a double boiler.
Add infused oil and vitamin E and stir to combine.
Remove from heat and add essential oils, if using, and stir.
Pour into containers and let cool. This recipe makes roughly 25 tubes, but you can also fill tins or little jars if you prefer.
Your lip balms will store in a cool place for up to 1 year.

Infuse oil with alkanet root for a few hours to overnight. The more you use, the redder the oil will become.
