DIY Toothpaste

When making toothpaste, it’s important to choose materials that are mild abrasives. Abrasives help to remove plaque and stains, but need to be gentle enough to avoid scratching enamel. Baking soda is a gentle abrasive that also alkalinizes the mouth, reducing bacteria that cause dental caries. Kaolin clay is excellent for removing stains and polishing teeth for a whiter smile. But this recipe does more than whiten and polish, it also helps remineralize teeth. Regular use of xylitol in oral products has been found to significantly reduce dental caries and increase tooth remineralization. Combining xylitol with calcium helps to build stronger teeth. An all-natural toothpaste that whitens, polishes and strengthens teeth, that’s something to smile about!

Toothpaste Recipe

3 Tbsp virgin coconut oil
1 Tbsp calcium powder
1 Tbsp kaolin clay
1 Tbsp xylitol
1 and 1/4 tsp baking soda
30 drops peppermint essential oil
15 drops spearmint essential oil

Add calcium, kaolin clay, xylitol and baking soda to a small glass jar and stir to combine.
Add coconut oil and essential oils and stir to form a smooth paste.
To use, place roughly 1/4 tsp toothpaste on a dry brush using a clean spoon. Brush teeth, then spit toothpaste into garbage bin (coconut oil can build up in your drain).
Rinse brush under hot water to remove oil.

TIP: If coconut oil is hard, immerse container in hot water to soften it, making it easier to mix into powders.
