Clean Beauty Awards

I was thrilled to have been asked to be a judge on CertClean's 2017 Clean Beauty Awards. CertClean is a certification for cosmetics and personal products that are formulated entirely free from harmful ingredients. According to CertClean, "In Canada, if just one chemical in a cosmetic is natural or organic, the product is legally allowed to be marketed as entirely natural or organic". We also have umbrella ingredients, like 'fragrance' that can refer to literally thousands of different chemicals. This is why organizations like CertClean, EWG (Environmental Working Group) and ThinkDirtyapp are so important for helping shoppers navigate the tricky and confusing world of beauty and personal care products.

Clean Beauty Awards

For the past 3 years, CertClean has been running the Clean Beauty Awards, which invites a group of judges to vote for their favourite beauty and body care products. I am honoured to be a part of a really impressive group of judges, like Adria Vasil from Ecoholic, Gillian Deacon who wrote There's Lead in Your Lipstick, and so many more, (you can see the full panel here).

I chose to judge the body care products and received a package with creams, lotions, muscle balms and healing salves. I spent weeks trying them out, evaluating how they worked and considering the quality of the ingredients they used. While all of them were good, some really stood out as exceptional. Here's a few of my favourites:

Ease roll on by Okanagan Lavender Farm

Ease roll on by Okanagan Lavender Farm

This lovely muscle and tension balm has a blend of herbs grown on their farm to ease muscle soreness and reduce headaches. It's easy to use, smells lovely and really helped to melt away stress. Made by Okanagan Lavender Herb Farm in B.C.

Pure+Simple Healing Propolis Hand Cream

Pure+Simple Healing Propolis Hand Cream

This hand cream is made locally in Toronto by Pure+Simple. It contains propolis and a blend of healing herbs like plantain, comfrey and rosemary to heal and soothe dry, chapped hands. As someone who gets really dry skin in the winter and has a hard time remembering to diligently wear gloves when washing the dishes, (I know!), my hands were great testers for this product! I was really impressed with how gentle (no stinging on rashes), yet effective it was. You can find it here

The other judges have also cast their votes and the winners of 2017's Clean Beauty Awards will be posted this summer. For now, you can check out the winners from 2016 here
