DIY Holiday Gifts

I’m not a big fan of shopping malls at any time of year, let alone during the holiday season. There’s something about the consumerism and the ‘Buy NOW’ pressure that really puts me off. For awhile, I even became a bit of a Bah Humbug-er about the whole holiday season. One of the things that has helped me rediscover my holiday cheer, is by making handmade gifts for the people on my list. There’s something about making something for a loved one, about thinking about them while you create it, and about seeing their face when they unwrap something that clearly took your time and effort that gets my jingle bells ringing! This year for the holidays, why not make your gifts instead of buying? Here are a few of my favourite hand-made gift ideas and recipes. . .

Body Scrubs
Body scrubs are easy to make, look beautiful when packaged and are inviting the receiver to take a few moments out of their day to treat themselves. A simple mixture of something coarse (like sea salt or sugar) to exfoliate the skin and something nourishing (like oils or honey) to hydrate and soften. Here are three of my favourite recipes:

Peppermint Foot Scrub
1/2 cup coarse sea salt or Epsom salts
2-3 Tbsp olive or sunflower oil
15-20 drops peppermint essential oil

Citrus Hand Scrub
1/2 cup sea salt
2-3 Tbsp olive or sunflower oil
15-20 drops lemon or lime essential oil (or lime or lemon rind)

Coffee Body Scrub
1-2 Tbsp ground organic coffee
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup olive or coconut or sweet almond oil
sprinkle of cinnamon and cocoa powder

Body Butter
Another ever-so-decadent gift to give is Body Butter. Whipped clouds of blended butters and oils. Super creamy and melt on contact to soften even the driest of skin. Check out my step-by-step directions, How to Make Body Butter.

Lip Balm
It’s not just the holiday season, it’s also the season of dry, cracked lips. There’s no better stocking stuffer then hand-made lip balms. They’re easy to make, you can make a lot of them all at once and you can add colours or scents to have some fun with them. Here’s my post on DIY Lip Balms.

Here’s hoping your holiday season is happy, healthy and hand-made!
