I have never been a good sleeper. I remember lying awake as a child bored to tears, literally picking the wallpaper off the walls because I couldn’t fall asleep. As an adult, the smallest amount of stress can trigger bouts of insomnia that then spark a vicious cycle as I begin to stress at bedtime about whether I’ll be able to sleep! I’ve tried supplements, guided meditations, binaural beats to put my brainwaves into sleep mode, sleepy time teas, . . . you name it and I’ve probably tried it. While I haven’t found a single solution, currently my sleep is the best it’s ever been by combining several of these strategies. Meditating regularly has drastically improved my sleep. Going outside during the day to get sun on my face. Dimming lights and turning off screens a few hours before bed. Using herbal supplements if I’m anxious also makes a big difference. And, most of all, establishing a regular routine. Going to bed at the same time each night and including routines that tell my brain and body it’s time to wind down and get sleepy has been transformational. Just like children need consistency and a sleep routine, so do adults. One of my favourite parts of my bedtime routine is this pillow spray with calming and sleep-promoting essential oils.
Sweet Dream Pillow Spray
125ml distilled water
25 drops lavender essential oil
15 drops sweet orange essential oil
5 drops tangerine essential oil
5 drops vetiver essential oil
Add water and essential oils to an atomizer spray bottle.
To use, shake well and spritz onto pillow before bed.
These essential oils help to calm the mind, reduce tension and promote sleep. Others that also work well include chamomile, neroli and jasmine (but they’re also more expensive).
Hope this spray gives you sweet dreams!
