The idea behind 'Vaporub' is that the vapors will relieve nasal congestion and ease coughs. Sounds good, right? But if you read the label, it comes with a warning that says, "Contact Poison Control Centre immediately if accidentally ingested'. Poison control? The label also recommends rubbing it into at least 3 spots on your body, 3-4 times daily. That's right, rubbing in the potential poison concern, frequently and all over the place! Now, call me crazy, but I'd rather make my own all-natural, nasal-decongesting, chest-soothing, cough-relieving Vapor Balm.Read More
One of my favourite gifts to make is Healing Salves and the key ingredient is Calendula infused oil. Calendula officinalis (commonly called Pot Marigold) is an amazing medicinal plant with antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. It is an incredible wound-healer and very soothing for dry or inflamed skin. Good for cuts, rashes, scrapes, burns, eczema, psoriasis and dry skin. Gentle enough for the most sensitive skin, even babies. Here’s a video to show you how to make salve:Read More
One of the ways I enjoy foraged foods most often is by drinking teas. I collect many members of the mint family (field mint, catnip, lemon balm), as well as horsetail, nettle, alfalfa, linden blossoms, rose petals, lavender buds, red clover, rose hips and red raspberry leaf. I pick red raspberry leaf in the Spring when the plant is putting its energy into the leaves, (before the flowers bloom).Read More
I am so excited to announce our upcoming workshop- Make Your Own Natural Bodycare Products! Together we have over 20 years of experience making our own personal care products and are so pleased to offer some of our best recipes to you!
If you've followed this blog, you'll see that I've posted numerous recipes for how to make your own body care products and cosmetics. Why? There's a number of reasons.
First, it's healthier to make your own. From hormone-disrupters to carcinogens, the vast majority of body care products out there have toxic ingredients. Even the term, "natural" on a product doesn't mean it's safe because the use of the word isn't regulated. In fact, the current regulations don't seem designed to protect us because there are a number of loopholes that allow companies to hide their toxic ingredients under catch-all names, like "fragrance". By making your own products you'll know exactly what's in it and what's going on and in your body. Best of all, we'll show you how to use the best ingredients to promote health and explain the uses and benefits of each one.Read More
